After five years of being subjected to unfair discrimination, DOJ Pride, a gay advocacy group, was finally permitted to utilize email, bulletin boards and meeting rooms at the Justice Department. Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey issued a revised equal-employment-opportunity policy that now prohibits discrimination against any group.
Former Attorney General John D. Ashcroft had barred the group from participating in its annual Gay and Lesbian Pride Month celebration and banned the group from utilizing bulletin boards and email, citing the Bush administration's unwritten policy of not sponsoring events without presidential proclamation.
Attorney General Mukasey's stated that the department is seeking to "foster an environment in which diversity is valued, understood and sought". Mukasey went on to pledge that the department will seek to maintain an environment that is free of discrimination.
